education
for all parents
CPI offers classes to parents of children ages 0-18. Each class is led by a trained parent educator who provides tools that parents can adapt to their own family's needs. All CPI classes have a strong child development foundation, supporting the belief that each child and parent brings unique needs and temperament to family life.
Although many classes are held at the G.K. Hardt Children & Family Resource Center in southwest Santa Rosa, others are conveniently located throughout Sonoma County.
Classes include Parenting the Infant, Infant Massage, Disciplining Your Toddler, Parenting the School-aged Child, Handling Anger: Mine and My Child's, and Parenting Your Teen/Tween. In addition, classes involving infants and toddlers, such as Two's Together and Kindergym, are attended by parents and children together.
responding to parents' needs
Families don't come in one shape and size, and CPI's parenting classes are tailored to meet the needs of parents in special circumstances. We offer dad's programs, support for teen parents, and classes for parents who are divorced, single and in stepfamilies. We have a class addressing issues of concern to gay parents, and teach workshops on internet safety for children. We can design classes for school sites and the workplace.
se habla español
CPI embraces the diversity of the Sonoma County population, and offers much-needed resources with highly trained bilingual educators for parents who primarily speak Spanish. Spanish-language services are available across all programs.
car seat safety program
CPI offers low-cost car seat classes in English and Spanish. Parents or parents-to-be who attend the class receive a voucher for a low-cost child safety seat, and learn to safely install it into a car.
special needs families
CPI provides support and education for parents with special needs children, including in-home visitations, specialized classes and resource referrals. Additionally we have programs that address the needs of parents who are recovering from substance abuse.
literacy programs
“Turning Pages” (“Volteando Paginas”) provides literacy education resources and practices for low income English language learner families with children 0-5 years of age.
Our goal is to help children bond with their parents through reading and sharing books, thus developing a relationship that will help children succeed in school. Children who are prepared to succeed in school are less likely to become involved in gang activity. Literacy programs are made possible with support from First Five Sonoma County.
The program has three components.
LITERACY FIESTAS - Early Literacy Workshop 2 hours
Reaches parents in a fun and culturally appropriate way.
Parents attending the training receive literacy information and a workbook with
fun and easy activities to do with their children.
LET’S READ TOGETHER PROJECT - Early Literacy Parent Workshop series
BOOKS TO WORK PROJECT - Family Literacy Support in the Workplace

family preservation
home visitation
CPI parent educators are often out in the community, connecting in homes of parents who can not attend parenting classes. Many of these parents are at risk of child abuse and neglect. They often face barriers such as lack of English skills or transportation, or even fear of being in a group setting. The CPI educators do more than coach in parenting skills. They provide referrals to critical services, and the support of a caring and trusted friend. In-home consultations are available to any parent who has a concern and would like to learn new parenting strategies.
parent/child supervised visitation
CPI provides a safe place for families in need of court-ordered supervised visitation. Visits take place at the G.K. Hardt Children and Family Resource Center seven days a week. We also provide families with supervised exchange services at the Center. These monitored exchanges provide families with a safe and conflict-free location to exchange custody/visitation time with their children.
parenting apart
Parents face special challenges as they grapple with separation, divorce and creating blended families. CPI provides support through several classes and programs that include the nationally-recognized Kids' Turn program for parents and children. The six-week program focuses on the needs and feelings of children of divorce while offering parents insights and skills that can help children cope effectively. Additionally, CPI offers classes on single parenting, co-parenting after separation or divorce, and parenting in a blended family, as well as CPI classes for parents involved in a high-conflict divorce who may need special help in overcoming parenting and communication challenges.
second chances: sonoma county sheriff's department
CPI offers parenting classes to mothers and fathers incarcerated in Sonoma County jails. For many of the inmates, it is the first time they have been educated about parenting. This allows parents to break the cycle of drugs and illegal activity, so that their children have a better chance at a good life.

counseling & therapy
We offer highly effective specialized program for families whose children have behavioral problems. Our Child Abuse Treatment program provides counseling for children who have experienced abuse and trauma. Our therapists help children resolve experiences which may include molestation, family violence, emotional and physical abuse, high-conflict divorce, or tragic death.
When children experience loss, abuse or neglect, they often suffer from issues ranging from anxiety to behavior problems and depression. Our experienced therapists provide individual and group therapy for children, and sometimes for other family members. Common issues include sleep difficulties, fears and phobias, sibling rivalry, foster care, adoption and divorce adjustment, and issues related to witnessing violence. CPI is a Medi-Cal provider.

CPI has been a community leader in offering parenting support to both custodial and non-custodial fathers. Integrated throughout CPI's parenting services is acknowledgement of the important role fathers play in the lives of their children. Fathering is fundamental to CPI's parenting curriculum and all parenting services incorporate a focus on a father's role in parenting.
